Challenges and Growth
“Inch by inch, life’s a cinch. Yard by yard, life is hard.” John Bytheway
Are you willing to work for what you envy in others? Are you ready to work for what you want? Two great questions. We often covet what others have. But what does it take to get what you want?
I wish…
If only…
It would be nice if…
Those statements are your desires. What are you going to DO to get that Ferrari, have more food on the table, grow your business, etc.?
Start by believing in yourself. Find the inner knowing you can have what you desire. It does take effort and a change in mindset and behavior. Get out of the toxic trap of thinking less of yourself and into an air of possibility. Focus on one small change (taking a shower instead of a bath, getting up 15 minutes earlier, putting five dollars in an envelope each week as an act toward your intention).
The question, “what are you willing to do” does not mean selling your soul, putting yourself in danger, or doing something illegal. On the contrary, it means getting in touch with your soul that has been buried under guilt, shame, and not good enough messages. Dust off your courage suppressed under the rubble of fear. Adopt an attitude of determination, and take the first nervous step toward your intended aspiration. Small steps lead to significant gains.
And of course, you are going to fail. Fail, fall down, embarrass yourself, make mistakes, disappoint others, etc. Call it what you want. The journey is not meant to be easy or clean. If everything were handed to you, then you would never learn, grow, develop deeper and richer memories, or strive for more. You have to be challenged in some capacity.
I like riding my motorcycle on smooth paved roads with beautiful clear skies. But I develop more confidence and skill when I ride through horrid construction roads, torrential downpours, and 50-60 mph winds. I do not get better unless I pushed myself through uncomfortable situations.
Charlie and I like hiking the gentle trails. But the strenuous hikes lead to more robust bodies and glorious views. Burning thighs, lungs gasping for air, each step brings me closer to my goal of reaching the top where I know I will rest and drink in, not only the view but my accomplishment.
Lean into the discomfort and learn about yourself. Believe in your ability to create and develop. Trust me, your gremlin thoughts are only real and accurate if you choose them to be so. You have the choice of many other paths.
Stretching yourself, being curious, and setting aside fear places you on a path of authenticity and growth. What will be your first step?
